الإستشعار عن بعد هو عبارة عن الإحساس بكائن ما أو ظاهرة ما من على مسافة بعيدة وهو يعتبرفرع من فروع العلم الحديث لكن تأثيرالإستشعار عن بعد قديما ًبقدم الحياة على كوكب الأرض. فالإستشعار عن بعد فرع من الفيزياء يعنى المطيافية الأنعكاسية Reflectance Spectroscopy الذى وجد له الاّن تطبيقات موسعة فى كل فروع المجال البشرى تقريباً. ويعتمد الإستشعار عن بعد على صفات الإشارات والمحسسات Sensors وأيضاً على خصائص التخفيفAttenuation لقناة نقل الإشارة. وهنا يظهر سؤال هل يكون هناك إستشعار بدون تلامس مادى بين المحسس والكائن قد يقول الكثيرين نعم لكن الإجابة الحقيقية هى لا وهذا بسبب حقيقة أنه تحت كافة الظروف الكائنات المطلوب استشعارها والمحسس تكون دائماً فى مجال تفاعل واتصال إما بالمجال الجذبىGravitational Field أو المجال الكهرومغناطيسى أو مجال الضغط ومن ثم مهما تكون المسافة بين المستشعرSensor والمراد استشعارهSensed فإنهما يكونان متلامسين دائماً من خلال المجال. أما فى الاستشعار بالتلامس فإن مجالات كلا الجسمين يؤثر فى بعضهما البعض لدرجة كبيرة جداً بحيث أنه ينتج مقدار كبير من قوة التفاعل أو ضغط التفاعل الذى يتم استشعاره أو قياسه. المكونات الجوهرية للإستشعار عن بعد ويشمل ثلاث مكونات : 1 - الإشارة ( من كائن أو ظاهرة) 2 - المستشعر ( من منصة) 3 – الاستشعار( اكتساب معرفة عن الكائن أو الظاهرة بعد تحليل الإشارات المستفبلة بواسطة المستشعر عند مختبر المستخدم).
