حن أمام كتاب خاص بكل معنى الكلمة. خاص في موضوعه، وخاص في معالجته. فأنت تقرأ كتاباً عن السينما (علماً وفناً) وكأنك تقرأ قصة مثيرة. ولا يرجع ذلك إلى جاذبية الموضوع وسلاسة عرضه فقط، وإنما -أيضاً- إلى الطريقة التي يتخذها كاتبه حين يعرض معظم الفصول من خلال تجاربه الشخصية، في محاولته -إلى جانب إبداع الصورة- إبداع المعدات والإمكانيات المطلوبة لتصوير هذه الصورة. إن الكتاب أشبه ما يكون بالسيرة الذاتية لصاحبه وهو يحاول الكشف عن الجمال في الطبيعة تحت الماء وكيف يصور هذا المجال ما يقدمه الكتاب عن التصوير السينمائي في أعماق البحار نتعلم أشياء أخرى كثيرة عن النفس، والأحياء، والبحر، والحياة المدهشة الساكنة والمتحركة تحت الماء، والغطس وعشقه ومخاطره. إنه كتاب رائد لمصور سينمائي مصري رائد، بدأ بتصوير أفلام الهواة في السيتنات، وتخرج في المعهد العالي للسينما قسم التصوير بتقدير جيد جداً عام 1971. وكانت مدرسته الحقيقية السينما التسجيلية المصرية التي صور منها خمسين فيلماً، حيث زودته بمهارات خاصة كان لها أثرها الواضح في تطوير العمل بالسينما الروائية المصرية مع المخرجين الذين عمل معهم، وعلى الأخص محمد خان في أوائل أفلامه، وأولها "ضربة شمس"، وعاطف الطيب في "سواق الأتوبيس" و"البرىء" وغيرهما. ومن المخرجين الذين صور معهم أفلامه الروائية التي بلغت حتى الآن 87 فيلماً نجد أشرف فهمي، ونادر جلال، وعلي عبد الخالق، وطارق العريان، وهنري بركات. ويتوج المصور السينمائي الفنان سعيد شيمي أعماله بهذا الكتاب الذي يفرد له مكانة خاصة -بحق- في تاريخ السينما المصرية.
