انشغل العالم في السنوات الاخيرة بموضوع حجاب المرأة المسلمة. وكان الدافع الى هذا الانشغال صدور قانون فرنسي يحظر على المسلمات ارتداء الحجاب في المؤسسات العامة، وفي المدارس، ويطالب بالالتزام بالقوانين الفرنسية التي تنص على خلع الحجاب في المؤسسات العامة، وفي الصور الخاصة بالاوراق الرسمية. وبعد جدل مثير في فرنسا انتقلت قضية الحجاب الى كل البلاد الاوروبية، واصبح ينظر الى حجاب المرأة المسلمة في المدن الاوروبية على انه رمز لتفشي المسلمين الامر الذي يؤثر على سياسات الدولة العلمانية، كما اتخذ التمسك بالحجاب بعداً اجتماعاياً حيث نظر اليه الغرب على انه مظهر من مظاهر التخلف وانتهاك خصوصية المرأة وحقها في الظهور، ورمز الى القيود على الحرية الشخصية للمرأة. واصبح الحجاب يمثل زياً قمعياً باعتباره زياً موحداً، ومفروضاً، وشكلاً من أشكال التمييز. وهكذا نظر الغرب الى الحجاب على انه خطاب سياسي أو إعلان موقف وتهديد لسيادة قيم العلمانية الاوربية.
