إن انتشار الجمعيات الإسلامية الأهلية في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين الميلاديين كان له الأثر الإيجابي في إحياء التراث العربي ونشره. وزاد من تطور حركة الأحياء تأسيس لجان التأليف والنشر والترجمة بالإضافة إلى تأسيس معاهد اللغات الشرقية التي من أشهرها مدرسة اللغات الشرقية بلندن وباريس وبرلين، كما اهتمت حركة الاستشراق بإنشاء المكتبات ومراكز المخطوطات. كل تلك العوامل الإيجابية ساهمت في إحياء حركة التراث العربي الإسلامي وخصوصاً عند الاتصال بالغرب. وهذا بالتالي كان في صالح تطور الأدب وازدهاره شعراً ونثراً في العصر الحديث. وفي هذا العصر تطور الشعر بقوة واندفاع كبير إلى الأمام، وكان نقلة كبيرة خرجت به إلى عالم رحب وواسع، فتنوعت اتجاهاته ومدارسه وكان هناك شعراء برزوا من حيث عطاءاتهم المتميزة فكانوا رواداً للحركة الشعرية في تلك الآونة، وكما الشعر، كذلك النثر، حيث شهر النثر العربي، تطوراً في تلك الفترة وبرز في ميدان الأدب بشكل رائع ومميز عدد من الأدباء ظلت أسماءهم عبر الأجيال كرواد أعطوا للنثر العربي طابعاً متميزاً في تلك الفترة. أخذ ذاك الطابع سمة التجدد والتحديث. وانطلاقاً من تكريس ما يحفظ لتلك الإبداعات موضعها في التأليف وليكون القارئ على دراية بها يأتي هذا الكتاب "عمالقة الأدب العربي" الذي يحاول المؤلف من خلاله إبراز أعمال بعض من رواد الأدب العربي الحديث، وليس باختياره لهؤلاء الأدباء انتقاصاً من بقية الأدباء العرب الآخرين، وإنما هو أراد توضيح رمز تطور الأدب من شعر ونثر قصة ورواية من فنون الأدب حتى تكون واحة رحبة مليئة بروائع الفكر العربي الخلاق. هذا وقد عمد المؤلف إلى استهلال كتابه بمقدمة ألقى من خلالها الضوء وأعطى لمحة بسيطة عن المسيرة الأدبية ابتداء من عصر ما قبل الإسلام، عصر صدر الإسلام، العصر الأموي، العصر العباسي، العصور المتأخرة، ومن ثم العصر الحديث. منتقلاً بعدها لبيان سمات الفنون الأدبية من شعر ونثر بأنواعها.
