خط الرقعة من الخطوط القديمة، فقد ظهرت بوادر استخدام على أوراق البردي ويقي مجهولاً، ثم شاع في الفترة الأخيرة، حيث استعمل في الاستنساخ إلى جانب الخطوط اللينة الأخرى وذلك لسرعة الكتابة إذا أنه يجىء بلا زخرفة ولا تصنيع إلا في نهاية حروفه، كالحروف "د"، ر، و" ومن القواعد اللازمة لكتابته هو الاعتماد على بعض الخطوط الوهمية التي تمثل الاتجاهات في الكتابة وهي بشكل أفقي، عمودي، قطري. وقبل أن سر كتابة خط الرقعة يعتمد على إتقان كتابة حروف أربعة هي"ن، أ، ب، ع"، فإذا اتفق الكاتب كتابة هذه الحروف على أصولها وقياساتها استطاع استخراج باقي الحروف من هذه... الحروف الأربعة، والهدف الأساسي لهذا الكتاب هو تعليم الراغبين فن الكتاب بخط الرقعة، والأسس والمبادئ التي يجب اتباعها للكتابة بها، بدءاً بكيفية مسك القلم وانتهاءً برسم الحرف العربي.
