يرتكز هذا الكتاب بشكل كبير على العمليات العقلية المتضمنة في المهارات اللغوية المختلفة وهذا فارق جوهري بين علم اللغة التعليمي، وأساليب تدريس اللغة، فإن الأسلوب الذي ينبغي إتباعه في تعليم اللغة، لا يمكن أن يكون له وجه علمي دقيق إلا إذا تم تحديد العمليات العقلية في تعلم مهارات اللغة، ولما كانت القراءة من أهم المهارات اللغوية التي لا بد من معرفة طبيعتها، وتحديد آليتها، والمهارات الجزئية المتضمنة فيها، فقد ركز هذا الكتاب على دراستها في ستة فصول هي القراءة؛ مفهومها ووظائفها؛ تقسيمات القراءة؛ مراحل تعلم القراءة؛ تحقق أغراضها ونموها؛ طرائقها ومعوقاتها؛ والسرعة القرائية. وقد درس الكتاب المحصول اللفظي الذي يعد من أهم المشكلات التي تواجهها عملية تعلم اللغة وتعليمها، وبخاصة اللغة العربية الفصيحة، كما درس القواعد النحوية، والكتاب والتعبير، والأناشيد، والمحفوظات، ومعاير تحليل مناهج اللغة العربية، والتقويم. ولهذا لكتاب منهج خاص يتمثل في جوانب كثيرة، منها؛ ما ذكرناه عن تركيزه على العمليات العقلية المتضمنة في تعليم اللغة وتعلمها، ومنها دراسة موضوعات لم تكن تدرس بشكل منظم، ولا كانت كتب أساليب تدريس اللغة تعتني بها كالسرعة القرائية، والمحصول اللفظي، وتحليل كتب اللغة العربية.
