لم أكن أتوقع أني سأنشر ترجمة هذا الكتاب، لأنه يمثل بداية معرفتي بعلم لغة النص، وقد حرصت على نقله إلى العربية في صورة أولية أستطيع أن أعود إليها إذا ما احتجت إلى تعريفات بسيطة أو تصورات أولية عن اتجاهات التحليل النصي أو استشهادات موجزة في فروع البحث النصي. وظللت لسنوات طوال عازفًا عن نشره. ولكن لاحظت في أثناء مناقشاتي لبعض الطلاب والزملاء أن المفاهيم والمبادئ الأساسية لعلم لغة النص ما تزال في حاجة إلى إيضاح مبسط غير مغرق في تنظير معقد.
وفي ضوء هذا الموقف، والرغبة الصادقة في إزالة أية عوائق أو عقبات تحول دون فهم دقيق وسليم لمفردات هذا العلم رأيت أن أعود إلى النسخة الأولى من هذا الكتاب، فنظرت فيها مليًا لفترة طويلة، ووجدت أنها تحتاج إلى تنقيح كامل، وإعادة صياغة لكثير من الفقرات، وتغيير ترجمة بعض المصطلحات التي لم تكن قد استقرت آنذاك (أعني في أوائل التسعينيات)، وإضافة بعض الهوامش الضرورية، ولكني أوجزت غاية الإيجاز فيها حتى لا يتضخم حجم الكتاب وتضيع الفائدة التي أرادها مؤلفوه من مداخلهم، إذ قد أسهم في هذا عدد من علماء النص البارزين، وأشرف على تحريره ونشره كلماير، وهو من أعلام هذا الاتجاه. وقد لاحظت قيمة المادة العلمية التي ضمها الكتاب من خلال قراءاتي لعدد من المؤلفات اللاحقة التي اعتمدت عليه في مواضع كثيرة، وأكدت جدوى نقله إلى العربية وتعريف القارئ العربي الكريم بهذا النوع من التأليف السهل الممتع، الذي يسهل استيعابه، ولكن يصعب تقليده.
