يتناول هذا الكتاب هدف الدليل وهو شرح المعلومات الاساسية المتعلقة بقراءة الخرائط بأسلوب مبسط ويوفر مصدرا للقائمين بتعليم الموضوع ومجال الدليل هو المعلومات الأساسية المطلوبة لقراءة واستخدام الخرائط الطبوغرافية وخرائط المدن ضمن مقياس محدد واستخدام أنظمة مراجع الخرائط واستخدام الصور الجوية ثم كيفية استخدام الدليل ثم يشير الى قراءة الخارطة وبيان كيفية قراءة معلومات الخارطة ومعرفة شكل سطح الأرض وتقدير القيم الخارطة موضحا أنواع ومقاييس الخرائط فالخرائط الطبوغرافية وخرائط المدن والخرائط التصويرية ثم ينتقل الى ضرورة معرفة المعلومات لمستعمل الخارطة الاعتيادى وهي تعين الخارطة والمقياس ووحدة قياس الارتفاع والفاصل الرأس والرموز الاصطلاحية وتعليمات استخدام الشبكة التربيعية والمعلومات الخاصة بالشمال الحقيقي والتربيعي والمغناطيس وفهرس تجاوز الخرائط ومعجم المصطلحات ثم يشير الى تعريف المقياس وهو العلاقة بين المسافة على الخارطة ونظرياتها على الارض بوحدة قياس موحدة وطرق التمثيل المقياس كالقياس اللفظي والكسرى والخطي ثم يبين تأثيرات تغير المقياس على الخارطة لينتقل الى قياس الساحة لخط مستقيم واستعمال المقاييس منفصلة واستعمال خطوات الشبكة التربيعية وقياس مساحة طريق ثم يتناول تفاصيل الخارطة وهي كل المعلومات التي تحتويها الخارطة بما في ذلك المعلومات الهامشية ثم يعد انواع التفاصيل والطرق العامة لتمثيل التفاصيل والرموز الإصطلاحية والتحشية والظلال واستعمال اللون ويتعرض لطرق تمثيل التضاريس فالتضاريس مصطلح علم يطلق على شكل سطح الأرض وأقسامها من حيث التمثيل على الخارطة هو الارتفاع والانحدار ويشير الى القيم الارتفاع الرقمية وهي النقاط المناسيب ورواقم التسوية ونقاط السيطرة الرأسية وخطوط الكواف هي خطوط الكواف الرئيسة والقياسية والمساعدة وخطوط الهيئة.
