وعلى الرغم من أن الباحثين قد توصلوا إلى إستراتيجيات تعلم اللغة وأطلقوا عليها اسما رسميا منذ عهد قريب جداً، إلا أن تلك الإستراتيجيات كانت تستخدم بالفعل عبر الآف السنين.
والآن ولأول مرة أصبحت إستراتيجيات التعلم متداولة على نطاق واسع فى مجال التربية بصورة عامة. وتحت أى مسمى سواء كان "مهارات التعلم " Learning Skills" أو مهارات تعلم كيفية التعلم "Learning to Learn Skills" أو مهارات التفكير "Thinking Skills" أو مهارات حل المشكلة "Problem -Solving Skills" فإن إستراتيجيات التعلم هى الطريق الذى يسلكه الطلاب لتلعم كم هائل من المواد إبتداء من تعلم القراءة فى اللغة الأم ومروراً بتعلم حل المشكلات الإلكترونية وإنتهاء بتعلم لغات جديدة.
والغرض الرئيسى لهذا الكتاب هو جعل إستراتيجيات التعلم شيئا يفهمه جيداً معلمو اللغة الثانية أو اللغة الأجنبية بحيث يمكنهم مساعدة طلابهم على أن يصبحوا متعلمين، وهذا الكتاب يقدم أيضًا أفكاراً تفيد القراء من غير المعلمين أو الطلاب. وأفضل طريقة لاستخدام هذا الكتاب هى اتباع تنظيم الفصول والتأكيد على الجانب العملى لها. فكل فصل يحتوى على أسئلة تمهيدية وملخص وأنشطة تعين القارئ على الفهم الأفضل وكذلك يحتوى كل فصل على تدريبات لاستخدام إستراتيجيات التعلم والموجودة فى الملاحق. وهناك فصلان تطبيقيان "الثالث والخامس" وبهما من الأنشطة والتدريبات ما يهدف بصورة قصدية إلى تحقيق الطبيعة العملية لهذا الكتاب.
