قد يتبادر إلى الذهن سؤال: ما هي الحاجة الى ترجمة كتاب بلغ الثلاثين من عمره؟ إن توالي طباعته (العاشرة) بهذا الشكل النادر هو جواب أول. أما الثاني فهو ديمومة الحاجة للاطلاع على الأعمال العظيمة التي لا تشيخ. والثالث، وهو الأهم، الثورة التي كان لهذا الكتاب أكبر الأثر في تفجيرها على أكثر من صعيد علمي وأدبي. فالنداءات التي أطلقها دوران في خاتمة بحثه من أجل "تربية جديدة للتخيل"، من أجل "تربية جمالية ذات نظرة إنسانية شاملة"، من أجل "تنظيم الكسل وانطلاق الكوامن وأوقات الفراغ" و"تحرير الدراسات اللغوية"، الخ، وصولاً إلى تحرير الفكر البشري من القوالب الجامدة والأحكام المسبقة، كل ذلك وجد آذاناً صاغية عند حشد هائل من العلماء والمفكرين الذين تأثروا كلياً أو جزئياً بطروحات هذا المفكر أو بمنهجه. تتلمذ دوران على يد غاستون باشلار الى حد كبير بدراسات يونغ وميرسيا الياد قبل أن يختط لنفسه طريقاً مغايراً يحاول فيه سبر أغوار الرموز والأساطير والحكايات الشعبية التي تتمحور حولها أو من خلالها "كوكبات" أو "خلايا" أو "أنساق" الصور الذهنية التي ينتجها الخيال البشري خوفاً أو أملاً، هروباً أو إقداماً، قنوطاً أو رجاء.
