صدر عن دار المؤرخ العربي في بيروت كتاب بعنوان "الرحلة العلاجية لسماحة السيد السيستاني دام ظله وأزمة النجف عام 1425 هـ _ 2004 م" من إعداد الحاج حامد الخفاف، ممثل المرجع الأعلى آية الله علي السيستاني في لبنان. يتحدث الكتاب عن الرحلة العلاجية لسماحته إلى لندن خلال عام 2004 والتي تزامنت مع أزمة النجف بين جيش المهدي من جهة وقوات الاحتلال الأميركي والحكومة العراقية من جهة أخرى، والتي أسفرت عن اشتباكات مسلحة في قلب المدينة وصلت إلى المدينة القديمة والحرم العلوي الشريف. الكتاب هو حصيلة مدوّنات الحاج حامد الخفاف الذي رافق سماحة السيد السيستاني إلى لندن وبقي معه طيلة مدة علاجه في العاصمة البريطانية ثم عاد معه إلى النجف، وهو يعرض لحقيقة الدور الذي لعبه سماحته وهو على فراش المرض، من أجل إنهاء أزمة النجف. وعندما لم تفلح تلك الجهود، قرر سماحته العودة إلى النجف فور انتهاء العلاج، "وقاد مسيرة جماهيرية إنقاذية تاريخية، فاجأت الجميع وقلبت التوقعات وفرضت واقعاً جديداً، ومشروعاً ناجحاً للحل، لينتصر صوت الحكمة على أزيز الراصاص ودوي المدافع..".
