ويمكن اعتبار هذا الإصدار اختصاراً للموسوعة الصادرة بعنوان (أطلس تاريخ الحضارات)، والذي جاءت لتلبي احتياج المثقف العادي غير المتخصص لمثل هذا الوجيز وكثرة الطلب على مثل هذا الحجم مع التوفية بالغرض.
وقد أثر معد هذه الموسوعة تسمية هذا الإصدار: (أطلس تاريخ العرب والعالم) ليكون دالاً على محتواه، لأنه تناول في ثناياه تاريخ العالم منذ القديم وحتى مطالع الألفية الثالثة، مروراً بحضارات الشرق القديم وحضارة الإسلام وتاريخ دوله وممالكه وصولاً إلى التاريخ الحديث والمعاصر... وقد اعتمد في المادة التاريخية على أوثق المراجع والمصادر التزاماً بأمانة النقل التاريخي، واجتهد أن يدع الحكم على الأحداث والوقائع للقارئ.
وزود مباحث الأطلس بالخرائط التاريخية اللازمة والصور والرسوم الموضحة لكل مبحث، وذيل تلك الصور والرسوم الآثارية بالشروح المبنية، واقتصر منها على الضروري مع أنه قد جمع منها المئات من عشرات المصادر والمراجع بعد معالجتها من الناحية الفنية لتناسب مقتضيات الطباعة.
