الديوان الذي نقلب صفحاته هو للنابغة الذبياني الذي هو أحد فحول شعراء الجاهلية، ومن أعيانهم المذكورين. وقد ذهب بعض النقاد إلى أنه كان أحسن الناس ديباجة شعر، وأكثرهم رونق كلام، وأجزلهم بيتاً، في غير تكلف ولا تفتت، حتى عدَّ في الطبقة الأولى بعد أمير شعراء العصر الجاهلي "امرئ القيس". وكان لا ينسج كلامه إلا على منوال الفصاحة، فيجيء شعره متين السبك، جيد الحبك، صافي الديباجة، واضح المعاني، وقد شهد له عمر بن الخطاب، وأبو الأسود الدؤلي، وحماد الراوية، والأخطل، وجميع صاغة الشعر العربي.
والذبياني هو أحد شعراء المعلقات، وقد اشتهرت معلقته وعدّت من عيون الشعر لما اشتملت عليه من فنون الوصف والقصص والحكمة والأدب. وهي التي مدح بها النعمان بعدما جفاه ويعتذر إليه فيها، وكان بنو قريع قد وشوا به ورموه بالمتجردة. وقد جاءت في طيات هذا الكتاب ضمن المختارات التي حفل بها ديوان النابغة الذبياني.
