يعتبر علم الوراثة من أحدث العلوم كلها، ولم يكن أحد يعلم شيئاً عن الوراثة حتى قبل قرن مضى. إن ما عرفه مندل استخدم فقط لتبرير مبحثه في تحسين النسل والعرقية. واليوم نجد أن علم الوراثة بدأ يتفجر ويستحصل على المرمّزات الكاملة لهذا العلم قبل نهاية القرن الحالي البالغ ثلاثة آلاف مليون حرف من الحمض النووي أو ما يكفي لتكوين إنسان. وينتقل علم الوراثة للمبتدئين من مندل إلى خريطة المورثة البشرية وعلاج أمراض الولادة وذلك من خلال رسوم بوريس فان لون، والتي تبرهن كيف تمّ اكتشاف الحمض النووي، وكيف تتصرف بعض المورثات لمصلحتها تماماً كتلك التي تحملها، ولا أحد يستطيع تجاهل علم الوراثة، أحب ذلك أم لم يحبه. وعلى الكثيرين منا أن يتخذوا قرارات أخلاقية يلعب فيها علم الوراثة دوراً. ويقدم هذا الكتاب المعلومات التي نحتاجها لعمل ذلك.
