محمد علي شمس الدين أديب وشاعر من جبل عامل في جنوب لبنان.
ولد في العام 1942 م في بلدة بيت ياحون في جبل عامل (جنوب لبنان) نشأ في بلدة عربصاليم (جنوب لبنان) وفيها ترعرع وكبر حائز على دكتوراة دولة في التاريخ، كما يحمل إجازة في الحقوق تفتحت موهبته الشعرية باكرا، ويعتبر من طليعة شعراء الحداثة في العالم العربي منذ العام 1973 وحتى الآن، وقد شارك في العديد من المهرجانات الشعرية في البلاد العربية ويعكف على كتابة مقالات نقدية وأدبية عن الشعر والأدب والفكر في المجلات والصحف اللبنانية والعربية، وهو عضو الهيئة الإدارية في اتحاد الكتّاب اللبنانيين.

يبدو لي أنّ "محمّد علي شمس الدين" هو الإسم الأكثر أهميّةً والأكثر واعداً في آخر ما كتب من الشعر اللبنانيّ الحديث، في هذا الشاعر شيء من المجازفة مكثّفٌ وصعب، لا سيّما أنّه عرضة لكلّ الأشراك. شيء ما يبعث على المجرّد المطلق، المتّحد الجوهر، واللاصق بالشعر في أثر شمس الدين؛ وقلّة هم الشعراء الّذين ينتصرون في مغامرة التخيّل، ويتجاوزون إطار ما هو عامّ وعاديّ، وهؤلاء يعرفون أنّ مغامرتهم مجازفة كبرى ولكنّهم يتقدمّون في طريقها. والشعر العربيّ يحتاج حتماً إلى المخاطرة، إلى المحاولة، إلى التجديد، إلى الإبتعاد عن التكرار، إلى هؤلاء التجريبيّين المبتعدين في ملاصقة الكشف الحديث. شعر جنسيّ في ذاتٍ شهوانيّة كثيفة وحرّة. شعر سياسيّ ولكن بوضوحٍ خاصّ، بتفجّرٍ ونغم... شعر وجوديّ بقوّة، يغوص في الأساطير، مليء بالرموز والإشارات. شعر علينا أن نقترب منه تدريجيّاً، بعد الصدمة الّتي يولّدها لدى قراءته للمرّة الأولى، ونحن نحاول أن نفكّ رمز الغاية الصحيحة من موادّه الأساسيّة الّتي يلجأ إليها…
