"جوزيف ابو خليل" من الأشخاص الذين نشأوا وتربوا على أقصى الحرص على استقلال لبنان عن سوريا باعتبار أن سوريا ذات "مطامع توسعية" أو ذات أغراض لا تقف أبداً مع هذا الاستقلال، بل إنه من الذين ولدوا وعاشوا في أجواء التوتر الدائم في العلاقة بين البلدين، وتأثروا بها، وبنوا عليها أيضاً المستقبل والمصير، إلى حدّ أن التقرب من سوريا كان عنده نقصاً في الوطنية والابتعاد عنها فضيلة.
فما الذي تغيّر كي يتغير هو ليصبح عكس ما كان عليه تقريباً من هذا القبيل على مدى عقود طويلة من السنين؟ وهل يجب أن تسوّى العلاقة بين لبنان وسوريا؟ هكذا بدأ عند مقاربته لهذا الموضوع في بحثه الذي تضمنه هذا الكتاب، والذي بين فيه أن الخطأ الذي وقع فيه اللبنانيون، أو بعضهم، في هذه المجال هو التصور أن لا شيء أبداً يميز العلاقة بين "البلدين أو التوأمين" عن أية علاقة ثنائية أخرى، أو أن سوريا، بالنسبة، إليهم وإلى بلدهم، هي مثل أي بلد آخر. فلا واقع الحال يجيز ذلك ولا سوريا نفسها تسلّم به... ولا تجارب سابقة في العلاقات الدولية يقتدى بها، ولا نماذج يؤخذ عنها، وليس أمام اللبنانيين إلا أن يفتشوا هم عن هذه العلاقات النموذجية.
و"الوطن النموذجي" يقتضي علاقة نموذجية له مع سوريا. وقد تكون التجارب الشخصية في هذا المجال ذات فائدة في البحث عن هذا النموذج، أو على الأقل في التعرف على خصوصية العلاقة بين البلدين وتحديدها. وفي هذا الإطار تأتي هذه المحاولة التي هي خلاصة تجربة من هذه التجارب لا مشروع حلّ.
