"لو أنني أعرف يا حبيبتي كيف أعيد السحر في العيون الخضر، والسواحل التي تموج، للقمر. والدفء للأصابع التي، يشلها الخدر. لو أنني أعرف. كيف أنزع الحراب من دمي، لأرتمي، على مشارف الأحلام دون شرطة، ودونما خفر. وكيف أستريح من زوابعي، لترجعي، ريانة كغصن بيلسان. شفيفة...، كقطرة مطر. لكنني أعرف يا سيدةً، يحتلها، كما أنا يحتلني، الضجر أن مهمتي، أصعب من تسلق الجبال في الدجى. أصعب من عبور الأرض، واستحالتي مهرجاً. لأنني...، في وطن يسومني العذاب لأنني.." أهش عن صلبانه الغبار، والذباب. لأنني مسجل على قوائم التهجير والغياب، لأن وجهه الذي أحبه مزوّدٌ، ووجهه الذي يحبني، محاصرٌ...، بالجوع... والخراب فكيف يا حبيبتي، تكون لي هويتي وكل هذه النعال فوق هامتي ولك هذه الرقاب معدّة للذبح...؛ دونما خطيئة، ودونما حساب؟ وكيف يا حبيبتي، أعيد وجهي الذي انفطر؟ ما دمت في حظيرة السلطان موثقاً، كنعجة...، قد بحّ صوتها الثغاء، فانكسر، ما دامت النجوم في بلادنا تبحث عن مجيرها، فلا ترى لمن يجيرها وجهاً، ولا أثر... وكيف يا حبيبتي، أرفع هذا الوجه من ترابه، لما أراه مطرقا، أساله عما به أشده إلى فمي معانقا أشده وحينما يصحو على خيبته، يسألني...، عن آخر الحساب!!!".
عندما تنكسر الأحلام على شواطئ الأوطان يصبح للشعر معنىً آخر، معنىً موجعاً، بما يحمله من معاناة وانكسار. وتصبح عباراته أكثر شفافية وعمقاً. وتصبح موسيقاه أكثر حزناً. في قصيدته تلك كما في قصائده التي أخذت محلها في طيات هذا الكتاب، ينساب شعره محمد مقدادي عذباً حالماً يستدرج مشاعر وأحاسيس وإعجاب القارئ بتلقائية رائعة.
