ماذا لو كان مَنْ كتبَ التوراة امرأة؟ امرأةٌ قبيحةٌ، لها جسمٌ مثالي، ومزاجٌ ناريّ، وقدرةٌ على القراءة والكتابة كامتيازٍ في زمانها، لكنَّها قبيحة الوجهِ، القبحُ هنا أساسيٌّ، كما الحيلة، والمفارقات التاريخية الكوميدية التي يستحثُّها الخيال حين تكتبُ التوراةَ امرأة. هذا ما يفترضه مُواسير سكليار في روايته هذه. ثُمَّ يُقدِّم تفسيراً لا منطقياً لميلاد النَّص المقدس. ذاتُ الوجه القبيح، ابنةُ زعيمِ قبيلةٍ، ينتهي بها المطاف لتكونَ بين حريم الملك سليمان، الزوجة رقم 701، وتقع في غرامِه. وفي خضمِّ المؤامرات التي تُحاك والخطط المأساوية ومحاولات الإغواء، يصبح القبحُ سلاحاً مثله مثل الذكاء تماماً، ويطلب الملك سليمان شخصياً مِنْها أن تَسْرِدَ كتابةً قصَّةَ شعبِ إسرائيل. ليس تدنيساً مجَّانيَّ الغرضِ للأسطورة، بل رؤية خارجَ السِّياق، ساخرة، بلمسةٍ نسوية. إنَّ هذه الرواية باختصار هي فعلُ تمرُّدٍ ضدَّ قناعاتٍ مُفرطة في تفاؤلِها، أو ربَّما تكون مجرَّد لعبة استفزازية ومُسَلِّية لا أكثر، لواحدٍ من أعظم الكتّاب البرازيليين المعاصرين. من الكتاب: لم يسمعني. كان يقترب ببطء، وعيناه تلتمعان بالرغبة. وها أنه، في خفّة عجيبة، يحاول إمساكي. دفعتُهُ عنّي، بلطف، ولكنْ، بحزم. أعاد الكرّة، فدفعتُه هذه المرّة دفعًا عنيفًا، أوقعه، فتدحرج على الأرض. أراد القيام، فاشتبكت رجلاه بردائه، فوقع مرّة أخرى. كان ذلك مضحِكًا، فلم أملك نفسي، وضحكتُ بملء فمي. ما أثار حفيظته، فنهض وهو لا يزال يترنّح، وصوّب نحوي إصبعًا مهدّدة: "هذا يُضحككِ؟ هذا يضحككِ، أنتِ؟ تضحكين منّي، يا كلبة الصحراء؟ تضحكين؛ لأني أردتُ نكاحكِ، وهو شيء لن يُقدم عليه أحد أبدًا، لا سيّما سليمان؟ انظري إلى نفسكِ، يا امرأة. أنتِ بشعة! أنتِ وحش من الدمامة! ورغم ذلك، وإشفاقًا منّي، عرضتُ عليكِ اقتراحًا! وترفضين، يا غبية! ولكنكِ لن تخسري شيئًا بالانتظار!"
