تناول رواية "حب من أول نقرة" موضوع الواقع والافتراض، وتجاذبات الهوية الافتراضية والحقيقية، وكيف أثّر الافتراض على الأشخاص من خلال غوصهم العميق في مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، وأصبح السعي وراء التغيير في علاقاتهم وقبولهم، من خلال التنازل عن الإيماءات والحركات والحضور الجسدي عموما، إلى جانب الكثير من القضايا التي ترتبط بمواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، والتي تعبر عن الافتراض في الرواية وتحديدا موقع الفايسبوك، في الوقت الذي أصبح حسب كاتبة الرواية الأشخاص كائنات الكترونية يحبون من أول نقرة بدلا من أول نظرة. ويتفاعلون افتراضيا باستخدام إيموتيكونات تدعي أنها لغة التواصل الجسدي عبر الانترنيت. وتضمنت الرواية العديد من الترميز والفقرات التي تغوص في توصيف واقع التواصل الافتراضي مثل "أليس غريبا أن نحب ولم نلتق؟ هل ستتحول قلوبنا إلى جهاز الكتروني ننظم دقاته كما ننظم توقيت منبه أو نغير رناته كما نغير رنات هاتف، بل قد نتركه صامتا حتى لا يعلن الحبّ أمام العالم. أي أيقونة هذه التي قد تملك حق تشغيل القلب وإطفائه؟ أي كهرباء سيشحن قلبا تملأه اللوعة والشوق لا يتوقف عن العطاء، كم يلزمنا من الطاقة لنستمر وكم يلزمنا من النقرات لنكون هنا ولتظل اليد باليد حتى لو رحل المكان عنا ذات انقطاع كهرباء ..؟" وحسب الكاتبة مريم نريمان نومار، فإن الرواية تحاول أن تقدم توصيفا عميقا لما يحدث في هذا العالم الافتراضي، من خلال تفاعل شخصيتين رئيسيتين مع بعضهما البعض عبر هذا الفضاء الأزرق المسمى فايسبوكا، موازاة مع الجدل الكبير القائم في زمن التكنولوجية، والتواصل الحقيقي و الافتراضي، ومدى تغلب الإيقونات وأزرار الحواسب والموتيكانس على الكلمات والجمل والقوافي، ومدى قدرة اللغة على الصمود أمام حرب البقاء مع وسائل جديدة للتعبير.
