نبعث فكرة الدراسة لدى الباحث في ضوء رؤيته أن هناك حاجة ونقص في تناول الدراسات التي تختص بتناول اتجاهات الدراسة في علم الاجتماع العسكري وخاصة الاتجاه الخاص بمدخل الدفاع الوطني المنبثق من مفهوم الأمن القومي ومن هنا جاءت فكرة الدراسة في موضوع: "دور المؤسسة الرئاسية والعسكرية في تحقيق الأمن القومي" "تحليل سوسيولوجي للأمن القومي الخارجي" حيث نعرض في البداية لدور المؤسسة العسكرية في تحقيق الأمن القومي باعتبارها المحور الأول لاهتمامات علم الاجتماع العسكري ثم نتناول دور المؤسسة الرئاسية في تحقيق الأمن القومي.
وقد تم تقسيم الدراسة إلى ثلاثة أبواب على النحو التالي: الباب الأول ويتناول "التحليل السوسيولوجي للمؤسسة العسكرية" ويجدر بنا في البداية قبل أن نتناول التحليل السوسيولوجي للمؤسسة العسكرية أن نستقرئ الفكر العسكري القديم، مروراً بعصور متتالية استناداً على المعالجة التاريخية التحليلية بداية بالفكر اليوناني والصيني القديم ومروراً بعصر الحضارة الإسلامية العربية وكذلك عصر النهضة والإصلاح الديني في المجتمع الغربي إلى عصر الثورة الفرنسية وصولاً إلى العصر الراهن (بدايات القرن الواحد والعشرين) وأن هذه الأفكار كانت تختلف باختلاف العصور التي نبعت منها، وإننا لم نركز على فكر بعينه ولكننا قصدنا عرض هذه الأفكار كمدخل فكري للدفاع الوطني الذي سيساعدنا في دراسة مفهوم الأمن القومي.
أما الباب الثاني من الدراسة "الإطار النظري والتطبيقي لدراسة الأمن القومي"، أما الباب الثالث والأخير من دراستنا فسيتناول "دور الاستخبارات في تحقيق الأمن القومي للمجتمع" وباعتبار أن أجهزة المخابرات بأنواعها الاستخبارية المختلفة لها دور حيوي وفعال للمشاركة في تحقيق مفهوم الأمن القومي داخل كل دولة في المجتمع الدولي.
