يضم الكتاب مختارات من الأدب المسرحي. وكان الحرص شديداً في هذه النماذج على جعل الطريقة في فهم النصوص وتحليلها والوصول إلى مغزاها والمراد منها مرتبطاً ارتباطاً وثيقاً بالنص الذي هو أمام القارئ، فينبع النص خطوة خطوة، مستخلصاً نتائجها منه، لا باعتبار هذا النموذج أدبياً، بل باعتباره نصاً يتضمن شكلاً معيناً من أشكال الفنون الأدبية الذي هو فن المسرحية. فالقارئ حين يستخلص حكماً من تعبير أدبي في المسرحية لا يستخلصه إلا بمقياس ما يؤديه هذا التعبير من معنى للمسرحية باعتبارها عملاً أدبياً متكاملاً تعمل فيه اللغة ما لا تعمله في غيره من فنون القول الأخرى، فاللغة وإن كانت العامل المشترك في سائر الفنون الأدبية كالقصيدة والمقالة والقصة والمسرحية؛ إلا أنها لها في كل لون من هذه الألوان طاقتها وحدودها ومجالها الذي يرتبط ارتباطاً وثيقاً بجوهر الفن الذي تعالجه.
هذا المنهج الذي يقف عند كل طرقة وكل لفتة في النص لا يعني اهتماماً بالجزئيات دون الكليات، وإنما يعني أن العمل المسرحي الكبير كل متكامل، وأن أي زفرة يزفرها الممثل، في أي وضع من مواضيع المسرحية لها دلالتها التي قد لا تظهر واضحة إذا تمّ النظر إليها وحدها، وإنما يكون لها الأثر والدلالة إذا ما هي ضمت إلى غيرها من الإشارات والتعبيرات حيث تفرد هذه الجزئيات في النهاية إلى الأثر الكلي الموحد.
