أراد قدرٌ مشؤومٌ أن يُحْبَلَ بـ"زينة"، بطلة هذه الرواية، في ليلةٍ ملعونةٍ، "ليلة الغلطة"، التي ما كان يجب أن توضع بذرة أي شيء فيها. تولد يوم وفاة جدّها. وهكذا يتحوَّل ما يُفترض أنه عيد إلى حداد. تصبح "زينة" تلك التي يقع بسببها النحس طفلة، ثم امرأة على الهامش، وقد أصابها ذاك القَدَرُ بلعنةٍ أبديةٍ، فتجعل من القسوة طريقتها للعيش في هذا العالم، وتنتقم من الرجال الذين يأسرهم جمالها. "الجبناء". تستخدم "زينة" نفسَها لغواية عشّاقها ثم تدميرهم. ديكور هذه الحكاية عبارة عن ثلاثة أمكنةٍ سحريّة، مدنٍ مغربيةٍ: فاس في الأربعينات، طنجة بعد عشر سنين، وشاوين هذه الأيام. يوظّف الطاهر بن جلون عدّة أُطُرٍ ليعالج الموضوعات التي سَكَنَتْ أعمالهُ على الدوام: عنف العلاقة بين الرجل والمرأة، الحب القلِق للبلاد، الولع بالحرية.
