[في 15 تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 1992، يقتحم الثوَار ماريكيتا، وهي قرية كولومبية جبلية نائية، ويرغمون رجالها على الإلتحاق بصفوفهم، ويقتلون على الفور كل من يقاومهم أو يرفض الإستجابة لطلبهم، ولا يبقى في القرية إلا الأرامل والعوانس بالإضافة إلى قسيس القرية وفتى أبيض البشرة، يتنكر في هيئة فتاة. وتغوص القرية في حالة من الفوضى وتمتلئ شوارعها بالأوساخ، وتعاني نساؤها من شح الطعام. وتتصور روزالبا أرملة باتينو، زوجة سارجنت الشرطة السابق، مستقبلاً جديداً لقرية الآرامل هذه. وبعد أن تنصَب نفسها قاضية للقرية، تعد يسنَ قوانين جديدة، وفرض النظام، واستعادة الإقتصاد المنهار- وتمضي في إقامة قرية طوباوية تفوق أي مجتمع مثالي يمكن أن يتخليه أي ثوري. وتصبح كليوتيد غورانيزو، التي تصل إلى القرية بحثاً عن مكان تمضي فيه بقية حياتها- معلَمة المدرسة. وترثي دونا إميليا خسارة زبائن المبغى الذي تقوم بإدارته. وفي الوقت نفسه، تشكَل مانوليا موراليس مجموعة من الفتيات اللاتي يشعرن بالحنين إلى الرجال، ويقمن ما يشبه "مبغى سحرياً" حيث تغوي النساء الوحيدات الرجال القادمين من القرى المجاورة قبل وصولهم إلى مبغى دونا إميليا. وبعد أن تؤدي عاصفة قوية إلى إزالة الدرب الترابي الوحيد المؤدي إلى القرية، لم يعد لنساء القرية أي سبيل للتواصل مع العالم الخارجي، وتقترح القاضية روزاليا "حملة الإنجاب" حيث يقوم قسيس القرية بمضاجعة 29 امرأة (تبين فيما بعد أنه عقيم). وتعقب كل حكاية ترويها النساء، شهادات عن الفظائع التي يرتكبها الرجال المقاتلون، والرواية مشحونة بجرعات عالية من الواقعية السحرية التي اشتهر بها كتاب أمريكا اللاتينية، ومفعمة بالمواقف الساخرة والإنسانية].
