في 15 تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 1992، يقتحم الثوار ماريكيتا، وهي قرية كولومبية جبلية نائية، ويرغمون رجالها على الالتحاق بصفوفهم، ويقتلون على الفور كل من يقاومهم أو يرفض الاستجابة لطلبهم، ولا يبقى في القرية إلا الأرامل والعوانس بالإضافة إلى قسيس القرية وفتى أبيض البشرة، يتنكر في هيئة فتاة. وتغوص القرية في حالة من الفوضى وتمتلئ شوارعها بالأوساخ، وتعاني نساؤها من شح الطعام. وتتصور روزالبا أرملة باتينو، زوجة سارجنت الشرطة السابق، مستقبلا جديدا لقرية الأرامل هذه. وبعد أن تنصتب نفسها قاضية للقرية، تعد يسن قوانين جديدة، وفرض النظام، واستعادة الإقتصاد المنهار- وتمضي في إقامة قرية طوباوية تفوق أي مجتمع مثالي يمكن أن يتخليه أي ثوري.
