يعتبر ابن هطال، مؤلف هذه الرحلة، شخصية مهمة في تاريخ الجزائر لكنها مغمورة، فهو مستشار وكاتب، ودبلوماسي، ومحارب عاش فترة خصبة من تاريخ الجزائر في القرن الثامن عشر جديرة بالتسجيل والبعث. يعرف التاريخ بأنه "من أجل العلوم قدراً وأكملها محاسن وفخراً.. إذ به عرفت قدماء الأمم.."، وقد سجل في كتابه رحلة محمد الكبير، باي وهران، إلى الجنوب "مقدار-كما يقول-بالسوائع مراحله، ومبيناً منازله ومناهله"، وإلى الكاتب، فإن الموضوع الذي يتناوله هنا مهم بدوره من عدة جوانب، فهو تدوين لرحلة تتضمن أخبار جغرافية واجتماعية وسياسية وعسكرية وأدبية لا يستغني عنها أي دارس للجزائر خلال القرنين الماضيين. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإن محمد الكبير، الذي كان سبباً في تأليف الكتاب، كان شخصية جديرة بتسليط الأضواء، فهو حاكم جزائري تقلب في مناصب مختلفة، وشهد تطورات كثيرة، وساهم بقسط وفير في خلق تلك المناصب وتوجيه تلك التطورات. شغل منصب (باي)، واشترك في الحرب ضد الإسبان، وقاد بنفسه حملة ضد الصحراء لإخضاع أهلها إلى سلطة الـ (داي)، كما عرف عنه أنه شجع العلماء والأدباء والطلبة، وأقام المدارس والعمائر.
