تطورت الفيزياء في وقتنا الحالي لتبحث على النظريات والقوانين التي تفسر ما يحدث في الكون من تفاعلات حيث أنه يعتقد العلماء بوجود نظرية شاملة تفسر التفاعلات الكونية: تفاعلات الجاذبية و التفاعلات الكهرومغناطيسية و التفاعلات الضعيفة بالإضافة للتفاعلات القوية. بحيث تصبح القوانين و النظريات الفيزيائية المعروفة لحد الآن مجرد حالات خاصة من هذه النظرية الشاملة. لقد كان أول توحيد فيزيائي نظري ناجح من حيث تطابق نتائجه مع المعطيات التجريبية هو الجمع بين الظواهر الكهربائية و الظواهر المغناطيسية في ما يسمى بالنظرية الكهرومغناطيسية حيث تعبر معادلات ماكسويل الأربعة عن ذلك بنجاح كبير. في سنة 1967 تم توحيد التفاعلات الكهرومغناطيسية مع التفاعلات الضعيفة في نظرية رائدة للعلماء: Glashow- Whenberg-Salam سميت بالتفاعلات الكهروضعيفة ثم جاءت محاولة للتوحيد بين التفاعلات الكهروضعيفة و التفاعلات القوية في نظرية سميت بالتوحيد الكبير . لحد الآن لا توجد نظرية فيزيائية شاملة لكل التفاعلات الفيزيائية الأربعة التي ذكرناها سابقا. في هذا العمل البيداغوجي المتواضع تطرقنا لمعادلات ماكسويل في الفراغ كمرحلة أولى و قد قسمناه إلى ثلاث فصول تطرقنا في الفصل الأول لمراجعة شاملة و مختصرة لمختلف الظواهر الكهربائية و المغناطيسية الساكنتين أما الفصل الثاني فخصصناه لدراسة الأمواج الكهرومغناطيسية في الفراغ حيث أننا تطرقنا لمعادلات ماكسويل في الفراغ في الشكلين التفاضلي و التكاملي أما الفصل الثالث فخصصناه لتطبيقات على المفاهيم النظرية التي رأيناها في الفصل الثاني و أنهي هذا العمل بملحق رياضي مفيد.
