يثير عنوان الكتاب عدة من الاستفسارات التي طالما ألقيت على المختصين بدراسة اللغات القديمة خاصة والمعنيين بدراسة التاريخ القديم بصورة عامة. ولعل في مقدمة تلك الاستفسارات السؤال عن مدى إمكان الباحثين المحدثين قراءة نصوص اللغات القديمة ونطق ما ورد فيها من مفردات لغوية وأدوات نحوية بالأسلوب نفسه الذي كان ينطق به المتكلمون بها في العصور القديمة. وإذا كان الجواب شافياً وإيجابياً فإن السؤال التالي الذي يعرض نفسه هو عن كيفية التعرف على أسلوب نطق اللغات القديمة التي توقفت عن الاستخدام منذ مئات من السنين.
وأما اللغة الأكدية التي بطل استخدامها لغة تدوين ومخاطبة منذ ما يزيد عن الألفين من السنين، فتتوالى الأسئلة والاستفسارات عن تاريخ استخدامها وعن المتكلمين بها وعن نصوصها المسمارية وكيفية تدوينها وعن قراءة تلك النصوص والتعرف من خلالها إلى نحو اللغة الأكدية وصرفها وفهم معاني مفرداتها وإلى غير ذلك من الأسئلة والاستفسارات الكثيرة. ويظل الباحث المختص باللغة الأكدية يواجه السؤال الأهم وهو الخاص بأهمية دراسة اللغة الأكدية أصلاً ومدى فائدتها لنا ونحن نعيش في عصر الذرة والتقنية الحديثة الذي طغى فيه التقدم العلمي والتقني على كل جانب من جوانب الحياة ولم يعد هناك فائدة ظاهرة لدراسة لغة لا يمكن استخدامها للتفاهم مع الآخرين.
إن في هذا الكتاب محاول للإجابة عن هذه الاستفسارات وغيرها مما قد يتبادر إلى الذهن بأسلوب علمي دقيق ومركز معتمد على ما تقدمه النصوص المسمارية الأكدية نفسها، وهكذا فقد اهتم الكتاب بدراسة اللغة الأكدية وبأسلوب تدوينها وبتاريخها الطويل وبقواعدها اللغوية وبمفرداتها المهمة.
