يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه طائفة من رسائل الأستاذ العقاد الخاصة عندي على مدى سنوات، ووقفت عليها في مظانها ومصادرها المختلفة التي أشرت إليها في ذيل كل رسالة، وعلقت عليها بما أعلمه من تواريخها ومناسبتها وما يتصل بها وبموضوعتها من حياة العقاد وأدبه، وتحريت أن تستند هذه التعليقات، أكثر ما تستند، إلى كتابات العقاد وأقواله، حيث ينبغي أن يكون هو القاتل والمتحدث، وحيث تقطع "جهيزة" قول كل خطيب.
وغني عن القول أن هذه المجموعة من رسائل العقاد الخاصة، ليست إلا نزراً يسيراً من جملة رسائله التي كتبها على مدار حياته العريضة الحافلة، والتي يمكن أن تقدر بعشرات المئات من الرسائل، هي الآن في ذمة أصحابها الذين كتبت لهم ووجهت إليهم إذا كانوا قد حرصوا عليها وعرفوا لها قيمتها وحفظوها بين أعز ما يحفظونه من نفائس، أو هي في ذمة التاريخ، وكم في ذمة التاريخ من تراث مضاع.
