انطلاقاً من الاعتقاد السائد بأن إظهار الحقيقة في حد ذاته يمثل ثورة على الصعيدين النظري والعملي، رأى "أحمد سالم الأحمر" أن يضع بين يدي القارئ العربي جملة من الحقائق التي تمكنه من فهم النظريات السائدة في علم اجتماع الأسرة الغربية، وإدراك مدى مطابقتها للواقع الفعلي، وتوضح له ما آلت إليه أوضاع الأسرة في المجتمعات الغربية، حتى يكون على بينه مما يتوقع أن يحدث لأسرته أو أسر أبنائه مستقبلاً إذا ما اختار السيد على هدى النموذج الأسري الغربي الحديث أو ما بعد الحديث.
ولتحقيق هذا الهدف رأى الباحث أن يركز هذه الدراسة على ما يلي: أولاً: شرح ومناقشة أهم الاتجاهات النظرية السوسيولوجية (الغربية) المتعلقة بدراسة أوضاع الأسرة، مع ذكر أهم الانتقادات الموجهة إليها. ثانياً: تسليط الضوء على الواقع الأسري في بعض المجتمعات الغربية خلال النصف الأخير من القرن العشرين، وذلك من خلال عرض نتائج أهم الدراسات المتوفرة التي قام بها مفكرون غربيون.
ثالثاً: محاولة التعريف على مدى تطابق النظريات السوسيولوجية مع الواقع الأسري الفعلي المتغير الذي تحاول شرحه وتفسيره والتنبؤ بمستقبله. وقد اثر تقديم الاتجاهات النظرية وعرض نتائج الدراسات الأسرية كما قدمها وعرضها وانتقدها أصحابها من علماء الاجتماع الغربيين أنفسهم بقدر الإمكان، توخياً منه للموضوعية والدقة العلمية، ولا نحتاج أخيراً إلى القول بأن هذا العمل الذي بين يدينا هو مجرد محاولة لتسليط الضوء على أهم الاتجاهات النظرية السوسيولوجية المتعلقة بالأسرة، وكشف الواقع العقلي للأسرة المعاصرة المتغيرة، وإبراز المشكلات التي تعاني منها في المجتمعات الغربية، والنظريات التي تدعي محاولة تفسيرها بينما هي في واقع الأمر محاولة لتبريرها وتعميمها وانتقاد الآخرين على ضوئها.
