ما زال بابلو نيرودا يعيش معنا، في كل حركة من حركات عصرنا، حياةً شاملة، عميقة ذات دلالة واضحة. هنا ، هناك، ثم في الأبعد. يعيشُ في نفسي، وفي نفوس الآخرين رجالاً ونساءً، مع إيقاع الفصول، والبحر، والنجوم، والشجر الذي ينمو بكل هذه الأشياء ويكبر. حين يلخص نيرودا تجربته الشعرية، فإنه يعي البعد الشخصي الذي يُعطيه للكلمات، ولكن من دون أن ينسى التأثير الذي أحدثته هذه الكلمات في نفسه. يسمي أولاً الأشياء، ثم يحفر خلفها، ويُنقب في لبابها بحثاً عن الصوت والصدى، عن الفعل السري الذي يبوحُ بكنه الشيء ومعناه. إنها معركة الشاعر مع البلاغة، مع لا عقلانية العقل، مع البحث الملتهب عن الكلمة الساحرة التي لا تُخبر أحداً، لكنها توصله إلى المصير. إنها الماسةٌ في بيدر، زهرة تتفتحُ وتذوي، كلمة خضراء فواحة تهتزُ كالسيف. نيرودا قبل كل شيء هو شاعرُ الحب، وأكثر المحاربين إقداماً ودودٌ في الوقت نفسه، مجبولٌ على الحب العظيم والرقة البالغة، صانعُ السماء والأرض. قال آرثر ميلر مرة: نيرودا شجرة. وما زالت هذه الشجرة تكبر وتونع، وتمنح ثمارها لكل الناس.
