قدمت الموسوعة لما يزيد على 550 نبتة، وتمّ انتقاؤها من بين الأعشاب التي يشيع استخدامها في مناطق مختلفة من العالم، والتي يعتبر أن لها فوائد صحية معينة، بالإضافة إلى ذلك، أدرج عدد صغير منها لأن لها مغزىً تاريخياً هاماً. ويضمّ فهرس النباتات الطبية الرئيسية كثيراً من الأعشاب المتاحة في الصيدليات، مثل الجنكة، كما يضمّ أعشاباً تشيع معرفتها كأغذية، مثل الليمون الحامض، ولكنها تشكل مع ذلك أدوية قيمة. كما يضمّ فهرس النباتات الطبيعية بعض الأعشاب الطبية الأكثر شيوعاً والتي هي أعشاب طبية هامة مثل شجرة الجنة وهي علاج طبي صيني مأثور لكثير من العلل، ويجري اليوم تفحص إمكانياتها في علاج السرطان.
ويجد القارئ في صفحات هذه الموسوعة أيضاً استعراض شامل لتاريخ طب الأعشاب يتتبع تطور المأثورات العشبية من أصولها الأولى إلى يومنا الحاضر. وتكتمل الصورة بعرض لسمات طب الأعشاب في أوروبا والهند والصين وأفريقيا وأوستراليا والأميركيتين، وهذا كله يقدم بدوره فكرة عامة عن طب الأعشاب في العالم.
