يعدّ ديمتريو من منظور التحليل النفسي شخصية انفصامية؛ والانفصام عُصاب يحدث من جرّاء القلق الذي يؤدي إلي تعدد أشكال الشخصية الواحدة، فتتصارع أكثر من شخصية في داخل الشخصية الواحدة. وكان هذا هو الطابع السيكولوجي الذي يطبع سلوك ديمتريو، فهو يتمزق بين شخصيتين؛ إحداهما مألوفة وذات خطاب عقلاني انتقادي، وأخري مستقلة وذات خطاب عاطفي. وعلي الرغم من أن التحليل النفسي يري أن الشخصية المألوفة المهيمنة لا يوجد لديها أية معلومات أو دراية بوجود الشخصيات الأخري المستقلة وأنساقها، إلاّ أن شخصية ديمتريو تعلم بوجود تلك الشخصية التي تشاطرها قلقها. ويبدو أن هذا البناء لشخصية ديمتريو، هو أسلوب سردي يسعي إلي إماطة اللثام عن الطبيعة الانفعالية لشخصية ديمتريو المألوفة. بَيْدَ أن الغرض الأساسي للانفصام في شخصية ديمتريو هو (محاولة رمزية للهروب) من الواقع الذي يتحصن بمنطق صارم حيال رغبات البشر، أو محاولة رمزية للهروب من (الآثار الوخيمة للقلق) نفسه. وعلي هذا الأساس، يمكن أن نلحظ أن شخصية ديمتريو هي الشخصية الأساسية في الرواية التي تتخاصم باستمرار مع ذاتها، فهذه الشخصية ترمز إلي الصراع الأزلي بين العقل والروح. فكل منهما يحتمي بمنطق يختلف عن المنطق الآخر، المنطق الواقعي العقلاني تجاه المنطق المتخيل المثالي
