هذا الكتاب محاولة للإجابة عن سؤال حائر، أرَّق أجيالاً: لماذا حدث ما حدث؟ وماذا حدث؟ أثارت عدة مقالات للكاتب الكبير فاروق جويدة حول تاريخ وتأريخ ثورة يوليو جدلاً واسعًا بين ثورة يوليو وحوارييها وبين أعدائها ورافضيها. وكان أهم ما فيها أنها اقتربت من الممنوعات وهزَّت عروش مسلَّمات كثيرة. ويضم الكتاب عدد كبير من الشهادات والمشاركات، بينهم من يتكلم لأول مرة.. وعدد كبير من الضباط الأحرار الذين لم نعرف عنهم شيئًا.. هذا بجانب أسماء كبيرة كانت يومًا صاحبة دور ومسئولية وقرار. ولذلك، فأهمية هذا الكتاب في أنه يشكَّل البداية لكتابة حقيقة هذا الحدث الأهم في تاريخ مصر الحديث.
