قدم أهل الأندلس لعلم الفلاحة خدمة جلية بما ألفوه من كتب وصنفوه من مصنفات دل ما وصل إلينا منها على أهمية تلك المصنفات وتلك المؤلفات في علم الفلاحة.
إننا ندرك هذا الأمر جيدًا إذا ما عرفنا أن جل المؤلفات الزراعية العربية جاءتنا من الأندلس. ولعل أهمها كتاب الفلاحة لابن بصال الطليطلي، وكتاب المقنع في الفلاحة لأحمد بن محمد بن حجاج الإشبيلي، وكتاب الفلاحة الأندلسية لابن العوام وغيرها ممن أفاضت الكتب في ذكرها. على أن كتاب زهرة البستان ونزهة الأذهان من الكتب الزراعية المهمة في بابها والتي وصلتنا كاملة.
أما عن أهمية هذا الكتاب فهي كبيرة لأنه جمع الكثير من التجارب الزراعية التي سبقته والتي أجراها الطغنري بنفسه أيضًا وتأكد من نجاحها، ولذلك فنحن نستطيع القول بأن كتاب "زهرة البستان" جاء خاليًا من الخرافات التي اعتمدها بعض مؤلفي الفلاحة.
وقد ابتدأ كتاب زهرة البستان ونزهة الأذهان بمقدمة تناولت جلالة قدرة الباري عز وجل، وعظمته في صنيع خلقه. ثم وردت في المقدمة آيات قرآنية كريمة تحث على الزراعة وتبين منزلة الزارع. كما وردت فيها أحاديث نبوية شريفة تدل على الثواب الجزيل الذي أعده الله سبحانه وتعالى للزارع والغارس، وهي من باب المساقاة والمغارسة. كما ورد في المقدمة بعض الآراء والأخبار نقلًا عن بعض المؤلفين والعلماء.. لكن الأمر الملفت للنظر أن هذه المقدمة تضمنت أقوالًا لمتأخرين عن زمن أبي عبد الله الطغنري.
وعلى ما يبدو فإن بعض النساخ أرادوا أن يضيفوا بعض الفوائد على وفق ما جاء في فقه الإمام مالك بن أنس رحمه الله، التي تتعلق بالفلاحة وتحث على الزراعة والغرس وتبين أحكام المساقاة وفضائل العناية بالنباتات، وما للزارع والغارس من ثواب عند الله سبحانه وتعالى.
وبمرور الوقت وكثرة نسخ كتاب زهرة البستان، صارت هذه الإضافات جزءًا من مقدمة المؤلف الأصلية ولم يجد الناسخون المتأخرون بأسًا من الإبقاء عليها. وعلى الرغم من هذه الإضافات والفوائد التي تضمنتها مقدمة كتاب زهرة البستان فإن الأمانة العلمية تقتضي نشر المخطوط كما وصل إلينا مع التعليق على كل ما هو خارج عن إطار النص وموضوعه عند الضرورة.
