ليس من قبيل الصدف أن يكون لفيف من الطلبة والمدرسين. الذين أدت أبحاثهم ودراساتهم الى ولادة تيار كبير في علم الاجتماع المديني، من جامعة شيكاغو، هذه المدينة التي عُدّت في العام 1900 ثالث مدينة في الولايات المتحدة من حيث عدد السكان، بعد أن أخذت تتسع على نحو كبير في نهاية القر ن التاسع عشر بوصول موجات متتالية اليها من المهاجرين الأميركيين والأجانب. وتوضح هذه المعطيات الأساسية الحقيقة القائلة إن تجانس مدرسة شيكاغو لا يكمن فقط في طرائقها في علم الاجتماع، ومنها بشكل خاص، الطريقة التجريبية، بل وفي موضوعات أعمالها، وبخاصة الهجرة والجرمية.
