ترعرع لي ميونج - باك في أسرة معدمة، عقب الحرب الكورية، ولكنه بالذكاء والعزيمة والإرادة تمكن من إجراء تحول نوعي في حياته، رافضاً الإستسلام لحياة الفقر والجهل، فالتحق بالمدرسة واكمل دراسته الجامعية بالإعتماد على نفسه، حتى إنه عمل جامع قمامة ليتمكن من توفير مصاريفه الدراسية وليعيل أسرته.
وبدءاً بموظف صغير في شركة هيونداي للهندسة والإنشاء ترقى إلى أن أصبح المسؤول التنفيذي للشركة وهو في سن الخامسة والثلاثين، وخلال قيادته الشركة أسهم في تحويلها من شركة إنشاءات محلية صغيرة لا يتجاوز عدد موظفيها 90 شخصاً إلى مؤسسة عالمية تضم 170 ألف شخص في مختلف أنحاء العالم، وتبلغ عائداتها السنوية أكثر من 40 مليار دولار أمريكي.
وبعد نجاحه في قطاع الأعمال، تحول إلى عالم السياسة، فأصبح عضواً في الجمعية الوطنية، وانتخب عمدة مدينة سيول عام 2002، وتوج حياته السياسية بأن انتُخب رئيساً لجمهورية كوريا في العام 2007.
