عمل معيدًا بقسم النقد والبلاغة والأدب المقارَن بكلّية الدراسات العربية والإسلامية، جامعة القاهرة، فرع الفيوم، منذ عام 1990م؛ ثم ترك العمل الأكاديمي منذ سنوات ليتفرغ للكتابة..

في طفولتي البعيدة يشرق دائما تلميذ المدرسة الابتدائية الرهيب، سألته المعلمة المدججة بالطفولة سؤالا أكبر من عمره، فأجاب الصبي المصاب بداء التفكير بإجابة أكبر من عمره (- إسمك إيه يا حبيبي؟ - أحمد بخيت - إسمك أحمد؟ - لأ ، أحمد بخيت - نفسك تطلع زي زمايلك دكتور؟ - لأ ، نفسي أطلع نبي) واحتاج التلميذ عشرين عاما كي يتعلَّم ويعلَم أن القاهرة لا تنجب أنبياء
