لم يعذبني كتاب كما فعل هذا السفر. كتبت ونشرت فصولاً منه في كتب متفرقة : (نقد العقل العربي) و (الثقافة أولاً وأخيرًا) و ( قيم التقدم) و (تأملات في العقل المصري) ... وأخيرًا جلست وأعدت كتابة وترتيب جُلَّ ما سبق مع فيض من الحذف والإضافة والتعديل؛ بما يسمح لي بوصف ما حدث بإعادة الكتابة. وهكذا يصح (أرجو ذلك) أن أقول إن هذا السفر هو النص الناسخ لكل كتاباتي السابقة عن الحالة الراهنة للثقافة العربية المعاصرة، و بالتالي العقل العربي المعاصر. ومادة هذا الكتاب (القديم - الجديد) تقول إن العقل العربي المعاصر هو أسير ثلاثة سجون سميكة الجدران، هى سجن الفهم البدائي للدين؛ وسجن الموروثات والمفاهيم الثقافية التي أثمرتها تجربتنا الثقافية-التاريخية؛ ثم سجن الفزع والجزع والرعب من الحداثة والمعاصرة؛ بحجة التخوف على خصائصنا الثقافية من الضياع والاختفاء والزوال أو امتزاج الدماء الشريفة لهذه الخصوصيات بالدماء غير الشريفة لثقافات وافدة ! وأرجو أن يغفر لي القراء الذين تابعوا هذا المشروع الفكري كثرة التعديلات التي شابته و اعترته و لازمته (بل و تابعته) لأكثر من عشر سنوات (نشرت دار المعارف كتيبي "نقد العقل العربي" فى 1998) . وعذري ومبرري هو جسامة وأهمية الموضوع؛ فمحنتنا المعاصرة والتى جعلتنا أبعد ما نكون عن طموحاتنا ليست ثمرة عوامل سياسية أو اقتصادية أو اجتماعية فحسب بقدر ما هي (في المقام الأول) ثمرة عوامل ثقافية هي التي يتناولها هذا الكتاب ... وإن كنت لا أنكر دخول العوامل الثقافية والسياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية في علاقة جدلية تعطي مقام الأولية لكل منها مع اختلاف زاوية التناول لمحنة مجتمعاتنا الآنية والتي أخذتنا بعيدًا عن مسيرة التقدم والتمدن الإنسانيين. طارق حجي.
