ذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن يوميات كتبها الرحالة جون لويس بوركهارت خلال رحلة قان بها إلى الجزيرة العربية سنة 1814 وكانت جدة في حينه بقيادة القائد المصري إبراهيم باشا الذي كان ينوي القضاء على الحركة الوهابية التي انتشرت في الجزيرة العربية. وكما هي العادة في تلك المرحلة فإن الرحلة التي قام بها هذا الرحالة بتكليف من جمعية التعرف على مجاهل إفريقيا واكتشافها وقد قدم بيركهارت إلى هذه الجمعية في حينه أدق وأشمل تقرير وصل إلى أوروبا عن الحجاز بما في ذلك مدينتي مكة والمدينة. ذلك أن معرفته بالغة العربية وبعادات المسلمين قد مكنته من انتحال صفة المسلم بنجاح حيث أقام في مكة طوال موسم الحج وأدى "الشعائر الواجبة" دون أن يثير أية شكوك حول شخصيته الحقيقية. هذا الكتاب يعتبر من أهم المراجع التاريخية حول الحياة في شبه الجزيرة العربية وعادات سكانها والأحوال السياسية والاجتماعية والدينية التي كانت تتفاعل في تلك المرحلة التاريخية كما يتضمن فصولاً عن نشأة الحركة الوهابية وانعكاساتها على حياة السكان.
