الناشر: "سلالم الشرق" اسم أطلق على عدد من المدن التجارية التي كان يصل عبرها مسافرو أوروبا إلى الشرق.97732 من القسطنطينية إلى الإسكندرية مروراً بإزمير وأضنة أو بيروت. كانت تلك المدن ولفترة طويلة من الزمن أماكن امتزاج حيث كانت تختلط اللغات والعادات والتقاليد، أكوان عابرة صنعها التاريخ بهدوء ثم هدمها، مدمراً أثناء ذلك العديد من الحيوات. بطل هذه الرواية، أوسيان، هو أحد أولئك الرجال ذوي الأقدار المتعرجة. من احتضار الإمبراطورية العثمانية إلى الحربين العالميتين، وصولاً إلى المأساة التي ما تزال حتى اليوم تمزق الشرق الأدنى. لا تزن حياته أكثر من القليل من القش ضمن زوبعة. يستذكر وبصبر راوياً قصة طفولته الأميرية، وجدته المختلة عقلياً، ووالده الثوري، وأخيه الساقط، وإقامته في فرنسا تحت الاحتلال، ثم لقائه مع حبيبته اليهودية كلارا، متحدثاً عن لحظاتهم الحميمية والبطولية والعالمة، ثم سقوطه في الجحيم. لقد أُبعد عن مستقبله وحُرم من حقوقه وأفراحه الأكثر بساطة، فماذا تبقى له؟ حب الانتظار، حب هادئ لكنه قوي، ولعله كان في النهاية أكثر قوة من الرواية ذاتها.
