يعد علم الاحياء من العلوم التي تتعامل مع حقائق تكوين الإنسان وديمومته بصورة متواصلة متجددة مع دوام الحياة واستمرارها بكل تفاصليها، لهذا فالعلم ليس علم معلومات على ما يعتقد الكثيرون، بل هو مجموعة من النظريات التي تم اثبات بعضها وينتظر الكثير منها صحة الإثبات. وذلك ما يعطي العاملين به يقيناً حقيقياً بأنهم جند صغار في سوح النضال من أجل الحقيقة والمعرفة، وقد تم توزيع الدراسات في هذا العلم على فروع متعددة لسعته وتباين مجالاته (رغم تداخل بعضها مع بعض الآخر). ولا شك في أن أهمها أساساً هما الفرعان المختصان بدراسة علم الخلية وعلم الوراثة اللذان يعدان أساساً ومدخلاً لدراسة علم الحياة. ففي مجال علم الخلية، تم اكتشاف أدق التراكيب للخلية الحية من خلال البحوث البايوكيمياوية والفسلجية والتي اكدت صحتها المجاهر الالكترونية، وتم فصلها وتنقيتها ودراسة خواصها، فضلاً عن التقدم الهائل في زراعة الأنسجة الحيوانية والنباتية. لقد كانت أهم مشكلة واجهت تأليف هذا الكتاب الذي يتناول دراسة علم الخلية، هي محاولة تتبع أحدث الأبحاث والمراجع العلمية المتخصصة في هذا المجال، مما جعل اعادة كتابة بعض فصول هذا الكتاب وتنقيحه أمراً لا مفر منه، لا سيما بعد ورود معلومات جديدة عنها، فعلم الخلية في طور نمو مستمر.
