أنطون تشيخوف (1860-1904) هو أبو القصة الحديثة، وقد ولد في مدينة ساحلية صغير لأب يعمل بقالاً، وأولع بالمسرح منذ صغره، وفي التسعينيات من القرن التاسع عشر، اشترى تشيخوف ضيعة صغيرة قريبة من موسكو؛ حيث عمل طبيباً يقدم الخدمات الصحية للفلاحين بالمجان. ومع بداية القرن العشرين، كتب مسرحياته الكبرى ومن بينها "بستان الكرز" التي أخرجها ستانسلافكسي ،ومع افتتاح "بستان الكرز" عام 1904 مات تشيخوف بالسل في الغابة السوداء بألمانيا. وهذه الترجمة عن الروسية التي قام بها أبو بكر يوسف أستاذ الأدب الروسي والمترجم المتميز الذي تخصص في كتابات تشيخوف ،هي بحق إضافة إلى المكتبة العربية.
