يقترح هذا الكتاب حلولاً عملية لمشكلات السلوك التي تظهر عادة عند الأطفال الأصحاء عقلياً وجسدياً ونفسياً. وهذه الحلول يمكن تطبيقها من قبل الأهل والمربين في حلّ الصراعات التي تبرز في المجرى الطبيعي للحياة الأسرية. أما هدف الكتاب أن يبين للأهل كيفية التصرف إزاء مشكلات السلوك بطريقة هادئة ومتماسكة وناجعة دون صراخ أو لجوء إلى الضرب. وبالتالي يهدف الكتاب إلى تحويل الأهل إلى "أهل نظاميين وقادرين على ضبط النفس عندما يعجز أطفالهم عن فعل ذلك.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن المبادئ المتعلقة بحل المشكلات والمنهجيات السلوكية المقترحة في هذا الكتاب إنما هي مستوحاة من حركة علم النفس السلوكي في الستينات والسبعينات وهي الحركة التي كانت تدرس سلوك الأطفال في الأوساط "الواقعية"، التي يعيش فيها معظمهم، أي في البيت والمدرسة وأماكن اللعب، ويهدف علم النفس السلوكي إلى تقديم حلول عملية للمشكلات متعارف عليها وإلى تقييم فعالية هذه الحلول.
