انبثق هذا الكتاب عن رسالة لنيل شهادة الدكتوراه بعنوان: "عن جوهر وأصل بعض رموز السحر الإسلامي" قدمت لكلية الفلسفة في جامعة توبنغن (الألمانية).
عند تصفّح كتب السحر - سواء أكانت أوروبية أو شرقية، من العصر القديم أو الوسيط أو الحديث، وسواء أكانت صينية أو هندية، تلفت الإنتباه تلك العلاقات والرسومات الغريبة، والتركيبات الهندسية، والطلاسم المشابهة للحروف، التي تنتشر غالباً هنا وهناك.
هذه العلامات تأسر نظر المراقب العلمي كما تأسر نظر الساحر، وفي كثير من الأحيان تُهمَل هذه العلامات بالذات عند إصدار نصوص أو ترجمات عن السحر، غالباً بسبب الصعوبات المطبعية، لكن الإهتمام بهذه العلامات التي لا معنى لها وتبعاً لذلك بالكلمات السحرية الناجمة عنها هو غالباً ضعيف أيضاً، إلاّ أنها تلعب في السحر عموماً، وفي السحر الإسلامي بشكل خاص، دوراً مهماً، فهي تتوارث من جيل إلى جيل وتحافظ على آثار قديمة تستحق الدراسة والبحث.
ومن أجل التعرّف على مكانة الخواتم والطلاسم في السحر الإسلامي من الضروري إلقاء الضوء أيضاً على المحيط الذي تظهر فيه في كتب السحر وعلى عالم أفكار الساحر بصورة عامة، وهكذا سنتوصل فيما يلي إلى إستنتاجات ليس لها صلة مباشرة بالطلاسم ولكنها قد تساعد على فهم الناس الذين يسحرون بتلك العلامات والرموز.
