شتاء 1970 وفي مدينة دالي، كاليفورنيا، كان هناك طفل يجلس وحيداً، جائعاً يرتعش في الظلام، في أسفل سلم كراج منزله، يميل رأسه إلى الخلف وقد فقد إحساسه بيديه، ولكن ما من شيء جديد في ذلك، فقد تعلم التغلب على الألم، فهو سجين أمه. عمره تسع سنوات، وهو يعيش على هذا النحو منذ سنوات، يستيقظ من النوم على سرير نقال قديم في الكاراج، ينجز الأعمال الروتينية الصباحية، وإذا كان محظوظاً يحظى بأكل بقايا حبوب الفطور التي تركها أخوته، ليركض من ثم إلى المدرسة، حيث يسرق الطعام، ليعود بعدها إلى "المنزل" وتجبره أمه على التقيؤ في المرحاض لإثبات أنه لم يسرق طعاماً. ليتلقى الضرب بعدها، وبعد إنجازه واجبات بعد الظهر يجلس من جديد في أسفل السلم، إلى أن يطلب منه إنجاز الأعمال المسائية، وإذا أنهى كل واجباته في الوقت المحدد، ولم يرتكب أية "جرائم" قد يحصل على كسرة طعام. ينتهي يومه حين تسمح له أمه بالنوم على السرير النقال، حيث يلتف جسمه حول نفسه في محاولة يائسة لاحتباس حرارة جسمه. إلى هنا لم تنته قصة هذا الطفل البائس دافيد والذي أبى إلا أن يسمي نفسه "هو" لأنه طفل تائه، فرغم تواجده ضمن عائلته: أمه وأبيه وأخوته، إلا أنه كان المنبوذ في هذه العائلة. حياة مأساوية تكشف عنها أحداث هذه القصة التي تلقي الضوء على المعاناة التي يلاقيها أطفال وأطفال في المجتمع الأمريكي، حيث يواجه هؤلاء بنقمة أهليهم ويضحوا مثار جدال ونزاع بين إنسانية وعطف الغرباء وبين تعس وقسوة وجور آبائهم وأمهاتهم تكشف أحداث هذه القصة "الولد التائه"، عن انحسار أمومي عاطفي إذ يضحي دافيد عرضة لنقمة أمه التي أبت إلا أن تتهمه بالجنون لتودعه المحكمة مستشفى للأمراض العقلية، وتضحي الأحداث أشد تأثيراً وأشد شغفاً عندما يحتدم الصراع بين أهل دافيد الحقيقيين وبين أهله بالتربية أثناء المحاكمة، لينكشف الستار عن حقيقة مرّة وقاسية. ولكن ليكن للقارئ الخيار بعد متابعته هذه القصة الحقيقية، في استجلاء حقيقة مشاعره اتجاه ذلك الطفل ومأساته ومصيره. وأخيراً فإن قصة ذلك الولد المشرد الذي يبحث عن الحنان في كنف أسرة لاقت رواجاً لذا فقد صنفت من أكثر الكتب مبيعاً على لائحتي جريدتي: "نيويورك تايمز"، و"U.S.A اليوم".
