العود آلة موسيقية عربية وكان انتقالها إلى الغرب في العصور الوسطى عن طريق فتح العب للأندلس وذلك خلال القرن الثاني عشر والثالث عشر وسموه "لود LUD" بالإسبانية وبالإفرنسية القديمة ("لوت" "LUTH"). وقد شغف الإسبانيون بالعود وقلدوه في صورهم، وانتشر العود في أوروبا على يد أشهر العازفين، وكان الاعتماد عليه كبيراً في مرافقة الألحان قبل ظهور البيانو حتى أوائل القرن الثامن حيث احتل البيانو مكان العود، أما في الشرق العربي فما زال العود يتصدر الآلات الموسيقية الوترية العربية، لذا فإن الاهتمام بتأليف الكتب هو هذه الآلة. والكتاب الذي نقلب صفحاته هو الأول في سلسلة تمارين موسيقية لآلة العود، حيث يتدرج الموسيقي البارع جورج فرح مع العازف من بداية خطواته الأولى على طريق تعلم العزف على العود، يعرّف أولاً بالمدرج الموسيقي، وبالمفاتيح، وبأسماء الأسطر الخمسة في المدرج الموسيقي، وبأسماء الفسح الأربعة وبسلم دوسات زند العود الموقع على المدرج الموسيقي ويقدم بعد ذلك التمارين على بعض الأنغام الشرقية وسلالمها.
