دكتور فرانكل، مؤلف هذا الكتاب، كان في بعض الأحيان يوجه كطبيب نفسي إلى مرضاه، ممن يعانون من عديد من ألوان العذاب القاسية أو الضئيلة، السؤال التالي: "لماذا لم تنتحر"؟ ومن إجاباتهم يستطيع غالبًا أن يجد الخط الذي يهديه إلى علاجه النفسي. وبعرض فرانكل في هذا الكتاب للخبرة التي آلت به إلى اكتشافه للعلاج بالمعنى. لقد وجد نفسه، كسجين مخضرم في معسكرات رهيبة للاعتقال، متجردًا متعريًا في وجوده. فوالداه وأخوه وزوجته قد لقوا حتفهم في معسكرات أو أرسلوهم إلى أفران الإعدام بالغاز، أي أن كل أسرته عدا أخته قد هلكت في هذه المعسكرات. وكل ما يملكه قد ذهب أدراج الرياح، كل قيمة قد تحطمت ليعاني من الجوع والبرد والقسوة، ومن توقع الإبادة في كل ساعة- إنسان هذا شأنه كيف يجد في الحياة ما يجعلها جديرة بالبقاء؟ هذا الطبيب النفسي الذي واجه شخصيًا تلك الظروف الشاذة لهو طبيب نفسي جدير بأن نصغي إليه. فالقارئ يتعلم الكثير مما يحويه هذا الكتاب عن السيرة الذاتية للمؤلف. يعرف القارئ ما الذي يفعله الكائن الحي الإنساني حينما يتحقق فجأة من أنه "لا يملك شيئًا يفقده عدا حياته المتعرية بطريقة تبعث على السخرية". وما يقدمه فرانكل من وصف للتدفق المختلط للانفعال والبلادة، إنما يستوقفنا كي ندرك كنهه. يضيف فرانكل، بناء على رجاء من الناشر، إلى سيرته الذاتية عن خبراته في معسكر الاعتقال جزءًا آخر يعرض فيه للمبادئ الرئيسية للعلاج بالمعنى. وقبل ذلك كانت معظم الكتب والدراسات المنشورة عن "مدرسة فيينا الثالثة في العلاج النفسي" (قبلها مدرستا فرويد وآدلر) تصدر باللغة الألمانية أساسًا. لذلك سوف يرحب القارئ بهذا الجزء المضاف عن المبادئ الرئيسية للعلاج بالمعنى. جوردون أولبورت
