لي من العمر أحد عشر عاماً، وأعيش وسط قططٍ ينهشها الجرب والتهابُ الرُّغامَى. قططٍ ليست أكثر من هياكل عظميَّةٍ مُعوجَّة، مكسوَّةٍ بالقليل من الجلد المتصلِّب، وموبوءةٍ بالكامل لدرجةِ أنَّ المرء يمكن أن يموت إنْ هو أقدمَ على لمسها. ظهيرةَ كلِّ يومٍ تأخذها الضَّفيرةُ* لتطعمها في نهاية الحديقة التي أمام المنزل. أحياناً أخرج بصحبتها. تتقدَّم القططُ نحونا، منحرفةً إلى أحد الجانبين، وترمقنا بعيونٍ هي قطراتٌ من الماء والوحل. بين هذه الكائنات المحتضرة كنت قد تعلّقتُ برُذالتها، بذاك القابع في الدَّرك الأسفل، غائصاً في الهاوية. كان يرهف السَّمع إلى الخطوات ويحرِّك رأسه ببطءٍ، كأعمىً يأتثرُ لحنَ أغنية. بشعرٍ أسودَ منتفشٍ ومنكمشٍ فوق جلدٍ متقشِّر، يجرجر قائمةً تتوارى بين سائر القوائم. إنه يعرج مُذ كان صغيراً، وهو الآن كبيرٌ، لا لحادثٍ وإنَّما لإعاقةٍ طبيعيَّة.
