تروي بيلّينو في روايتها، ذكرياتِ ماري مع مريم، بأسلوبٍ سينمائيٍّ تشويقيٍّ، كأنَّها تمرِّرُّ أمامَ أعيننا شريطَ فيلمٍ على الطريق؛ بين الحياةِ في روما والعطلات الصيْفيّة في القيروان، تستحضرُها بكلٍّ تفاصيلها، وكيفَ تتحوَّل الصداقة بين ماري عالمة الأنثروبولوجيا الإيطالية ومريم التونسية المُهاجرة إلى إيطاليا بدافعِ الحبّ والهروبِ من زوج أمّها المستبدّ؛ إلى بحثٍ عميقٍ عن الذَّات، تتكشَّفُ سُبلُهُ الخفيّة بشكلٍ مُدهشٍ، عبر قصة امرأتين تجدان الطريق إلى ثورتهما الخاصّة.
