أيّها الحبّ! إنّ الفنونَ الجميلةَ بَناتُك؛ ولقد كنتَ أوّلَ مرشدٍ لقداسة الشِّعر على هذه الأرض. ليس إلّا الشِّعرَ غذاءٌ للنفوس الكريمة التي من عمق عزلتها تتوارث الأناشيد من جيلٍ إلى جيل، فتستنهض الهممَ لأنبل الغايات بتلك الأصوات والأفكار التي أوحت بها السماء. أيّها الحبُّ الذي تنير في صدرونا أعظمَ سجيّةٍ لدى الإنسان: الرأفة، التي بفضلها تتبسَّم شفاهُ التعيس الذي تحتَّمَ عليه العويل. من خلالك تحيا في الكائنات متعةُ الإخصاب، فلولاها لاستحال كلُّ شيءٍ إلى عدمٍ وفوضى. إن أنتَ هجرتنا يا حبُّ، أمست الأرضُ بخيلةً، والأحياءُ أعداءً متناحرين، والشمسُ نارًا خبيثةً، والدنيا بكاءً وذعرًا ودمارًا كونيًّا. أمّا وقد أنرتَ روحي بشعاعٍ واحدٍ منك نسيتُ الشقاءَ، وسخرتُ من وعيد القَدَر، وتنزَّهتُ عن مغريات المصير. يُعَدُّ أوغو فوسكولو رائد الحركة الرومانسيّة في الأدب الإيطاليّ، وواحدًا من أوائل المتأثّرين بالمجريات التاريخيّة للثورة الفرنسيّة وعواقبها. كما تُعَدُّ روايته هذه أوّلَ ما كُتِب من أدب الرسائل باللغة الإيطاليّة، فضلًا عن كونها عملًا مشحونًا بعناصر الوطنيّة والرومانسيّة. ففي هذه الصفحات سيتمعّن القارئُ بطوايا النفس وما يعتصرها من ألمٍ منسوبٍ إلى الخيبات السياسيّة والغراميّة، وسيتبيّن العلاقة التي يصيغها الشاعر-الإنسان مع محيطه بموضوعاتٍ فنيّةٍ تتطرّق إلى الطبيعة، والحبّ، والوطن، والمجتمع، والفضيلة، والحريّة والخلاص. وإذ أُلِّفت الروايةُ بأسلوبٍ شاعريٍّ متأجّجٍ وغاضب، أرادها راويها صرخةً تعبِّر عن وجع الخديعة النازف وحسرةً على يقظة الوعي بعد فوات الأوان. وهي تجسّد لعنة النفي التي لازمته على الدوام، وجعلته يقتدي بالشاعر الأعظم دانتي الذي ما كان ليُنضِجَ فكره ويؤلّفَ رائعته الخالدة لولا النفي والإقصاء والخذلان والصدمة بمظاهر الإنسان وبواطنه.المترجم
